Earlier this summer, my good friend, Jan Maxwell, tagged me in a post on Facebook about a new place in Hayesville, Ohio, that served pizza and ice cream. Hayesville is a small village just a few miles off of US Route 30. It looked like a place I’d like to visit, but honestly, though, I never heard of Hayesville… and my husband, Bobby, and I travel that stretch of highway a lot. It is funny the things you miss along the way to somewhere else.
So when Jan and I made plans to meet up to talk about her and her husband, Ron’s, trip to see Tecumseh, we decided to make a night of it and go visit The Point Parlor. We could talk about their Tecumseh experience and try a new place. Sounded like a win-win to me! (Watch for a post on Tecumseh in the near future.)
Like I said, Hayesville is just down the street a bit from the highway and The Point Parlor is on the left side of the road as you are coming into town. On a Sunday evening, the place had several cars in their lot, so we parked on the road across the street from it.
I liked the look of the place from the outside. I like that they proudly display when the restaurant was established — 2018. I figure in future years, people will come and say, “Wow, they’ve been around for so long!”
When we walked inside the first thing I saw was the leather cushioned bench along the wall. I assume it was for when the place was really crazy busy, so people would have a place to wait to pick up their pizza. I just had to give it a try. It was pretty comfy!
The staff was super helpful. Seeing as we had never been there before, we weren’t sure what to do. They explained that we order at the counter and then find a seat. I didn’t ask, but after awhile I noticed that food was being delivered outside, so I assumed there must be patio seating available. The dining room itself offered booths, tables, both high top and regular and was very clean and well lit.
Bobby and I ordered our “go to” pizza — pepperoni and bacon. We got a size big enough that we would have left overs (16″) and a pound of wings. I don’t like buffalo flavor and Bobby didn’t feel like bbq, so we got the garlic parmesan wings. Ron and Jan ordered pretzel nuggets with beer cheese sauce and a 12″ pizza with pepperoni and mushrooms.
We took our numbers and went to our table. The entire time we were there — until the time that we left, which was about 15 minutes before they closed — the place had a steady stream of customers. Some came in to pick up pizza. Some came in for ice cream. Some came in for both. One woman came in and picked up two pizzas and four or five slushies. (She had 3 children with her.)
Jan and Ron were generous and shared their pretzel nuggets with us. We all really enjoyed them. They were chewy and salty, just like they should be. The cheese was a nice complement to the nuggets.
The pizzas were good. They have a thinner crust, but not cracker thin. It held up pretty good, even with the toppings on them. I think Bobby would have liked it a little bit crispier, but it was fine for my taste. I thought that the pepperoni and bacon had a good crisp to them, so I enjoyed the crust as it was. I think, all in all, we a really enjoyed the pizzas. Ron and Jan offered us some of theirs, but Bobby doesn’t like mushrooms, and I was trying to save room for ice cream. (I did trade them a piece of our pizza for one of theirs so I could have it home at a later meal.)
While the wings had a good flavor, both Bobby and I like our wings crispier. One of the things that The Point Parlor points out is that their wings are baked and not fried. I’m sure that is a healthier choice, but I still would have liked a little more crispiness to them. However, I will say, they were good size wings. There have been times when Bobby and I have gotten what a restaurant labeled as “jumbo wings” but they seemed just regular size. Here I think The Point Parlor could have labeled their wings as jumbo and no one would have complained. I’ll be interested to see how they do after they are crisped up a bit more in our toaster oven. The garlic parmesan was an interesting choice. I think I would have preferred bbq and Bobby would have preferred buffalo, but it was a nice to switch it up a little.
For those of you who like pizza, but have issues with gluten or are avoiding carbs, then The Point Parlor is the place to go. They offer not only gluten free pizza crust, but also cauliflower pizza crust. I might have tried the cauliflower crust, but Bobby was adamant that we would not be trying it. If you go and do get it, let me know how it is!
After we got done enjoying our dinner, it was time for dessert! The Point Parlor gets their ice cream from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream out of Wisconsin. They have all kinds of cool and interesting flavors. After trying several (yes, they allow you to sample as many as you want), I opted for the Mint Avalanche (mint ice cream loaded with Andes® Candies and Grasshopper ® cookies with a chocolate fudge swirl) and Peanut Butter Cup which is chocolate ice cream with peanut butter ripples and peanut butter cups in a waffle cone. Normally I would have gotten the mint ice cream with plain chocolate, but after tasting the Peanut Butter Cup, I knew I wanted it.
Bobby got a two scoop waffle cone with Coconut Bliss. That ice cream is coconut-flavored with chocolate flakes and almond pieces. His second scoop was called “This $&@! Just Got Serious” which is a trade-marked name for salted caramel ice cream that includes sea salt fudge and salted cashews. He shared a hunk of the fudge that he found in his ice cream with me. I guess you know it is love when someone surrenders a chunk of chocolate from their ice cream so freely! Jan and Ron also went with the “This $&@! Just Got Serious” scoop. However, they just went for the modest one scoop in a waffle cone. But a single scoop is really more than just a measley little scoop.
Needless to say, when we walked out of The Point Parlor at 8:45 on a Sunday night, we were feeling pretty full. Plus we had boxes of food to take home with us. It was a nice night to be out. The weather was perfect, the company was superb and the food was delicious. If you like pizza and ice cream, they are well worth the drive. You can get beer there, too, but you’re on your own regarding that! If pizza isn’t your thing, they do have appetizers, subs and and salads, too. Remember to report back if you try the cauliflower pizza. I’m dying to know what it is like!
