I have had some hard weeks before, but this past week (April 9-14) was an especially difficult. It started with dog sitting for my sister, Randi, in Lodi. I had been there since Thursday, April 6, but on Sunday, April 9, her dog, Parker, became quite ill. This meant spending most of the day in the Metropolitan Emergency Hospital in Akron. Thankfully, Parker is doing much better now. Next came a week full of deadlines and pressures, which is mostly unusual for my job. I felt I had already … [Read more...]
Mighty Owney: Here He Is, To Save The Day!
I am by no means a super hero. I have no super powers like Underdog, but I do have canine intuition. I was called into action recently to save the day. OK, maybe "save the day" is a bit of a stretch. But if you were there and heard my dad, Bobby, talk about it, I did save the day. While maybe it had no impact on the economy or world peace, it impacted my family and my peace. Let me set the stage. My mom, Wendi, was signed up to go to a training in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, March 23. … [Read more...]

Owney Didn’t Want His Trip to Freelander Park to End
When my parents, Bobby and Wendi Warren, celebrated their anniversary, they let me go to one of my favorite vacation spots, Grandpa and Grandma's house. (You might know them better as Bud and Dolores Breese.) While I love staying there, I still miss Mom and Dad a lot. I think they miss me too, because we seem to do something special after they pick me up. (If it isn't dark and they're not too tired.) So on Sunday, March 5,they decided to take me to a place I have never been. They called … [Read more...]
Helms Old Fashion Barber Shop Only Missing Floyd
When Ryan Helms rolled into town in October 2008, he had one goal in mind: Open an old fashion barber shop like the one he frequented growing up in Akron. Any doubts about whether the throwback shop would succeed are long gone. Helms recently moved into a new storefront three doors down (literally, not the band), which provides more space and more options (like a kids' area, a lunch room for the staff, and bathrooms that offer more privacy than the old shop. I was never much for barbers. … [Read more...]
