Wendi and I were in Lodi on March 4, 2016, when I received back-to-back calls from the Wayne County commissioners' office informing me construction workers at the courthouse had found an elusive time capsule and at 2 p.m. it would be removed from the vault where it has been secured since 1878. For a newsman, this is serious business, but March 4 is not your ordinary day in my household: It's our anniversary date. The journalist in me wanted to head back to Wooster and be there to shoot … [Read more...]
In a Word, Rox Gastropub in Wooster Rocks
My wife, Wendi, and I love to watch Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-ins & Dives" and Michael Symon's "Burgers, Brews & 'Cue" on the Food Network. It was while watching one of these shows where we learned of the term "gastropub," which generally refers to a pub that serves quality food. The owners of Broken Rocks Cafe & Bakery brought that style of eatery and pub to Wooster, and we are better for it. Wendi and I decided to try out the Rox Gastropub with her sister, Randi Breese, and … [Read more...]
Viva Las Vegas: Wooster Style
Gambling isn't my thing. I'm too much of a chicken that I'll lose my life savings (which ain't much), if I start. However, for as a fund raiser, where any money I give the "bank" goes to a good cause, I will participate. I'll even ask my sister and brother-in-law, Randi and Shaun to join me. This was the case on Saturday, February 27, 2016. The Village Network, the organization with which I am employed, held the Second Annual Casino night at the Best Western in downtown Wooster. We had … [Read more...]
Crossed Off Bucket List: Go to Prom
I didn't get a chance to go to my prom in high school. The main reason is that no one asked me. High school was definitely not a time that I treasured, but I do regret not getting to go to prom. I told my husband, Bobby, about this years ago. Unbeknownst to me, Bobby filed this information in the back of his mind. He wanted to be the one to take me to a prom. Although it never worked out where there was an adult prom that we could go to, that changed on Saturday, February 22, 2016. The … [Read more...]
Books, Nooks and Cooks
Sometimes my day trips turn out to be half day trips. And when I am close to home, they might even be less than that. This is the case of my most recent visit to Downtown Wooster. I recently wrote about how my husband, Bobby, and I had lunch with Marty Starkey, the executive director of the Wayne County Convention and Visitors Bureau. We met at Broken Rocks Cafe, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch. You can read more about our visit with Marty here. After we had lunch, Bobby and I … [Read more...]
