When a co-worker who once worked in New York City recommended I go to Lombardi's for pizza while in Manhattan, I had no clue it was the first pizzeria in America. I knew Emily would not steer me in the wrong direction when it comes to pizza, but I was pleasantly surprised to learn about the spot it has in the history of pizza in America. As I have written before, I grew up outside Boston, where they make what is called a New York-style pizza. Well, the New York pizza is based on the … [Read more...]
How we got Caught up in the Grimaldi’s-Juliana’s Pizza Feud in Brooklyn
I love New York-style pizza, which is based on the original Pizza Margherita from Naples, Italy. It features a thin, but crisp crust, tomato sauce (true Neapolitan pizza uses San Marzano tomatoes run through a food mill with a little salt) and mozzarella cheese. It is this New York-style pizza that made its way to Boston and perfected at Pizzeria Regina in the North End. So, when Wendi and I were headed to New York City, I asked my co-worker, Mogie, where to go because she used to work in the … [Read more...]
New York City, Here We Come — Again!
Up until October 2015 I would have never entertained the idea of traveling to New York City. I had been there once in 1989 or 1990, but it was a really quick trip. My impression of New York was that it was crowded and busy. But in October 2015 I put in a proposal to do a presentation for a conference that would be held at the … [Read more...]
Review: Bosco’s Pizza Kitchen in Wooster
Ever since my wife, Wendi, and I purchased a new Broil King grill from Home Appliance, with two Ohio locations in Lodi and Brunswick, we have been grilling out a lot more, and I have been on a grilled pizza kick, having made four grilled pizzas within the span of a week. However, I have been wanting to try Bosco's Pizza Kitchen again, and so Wendi and I ordered a pizza and wings for carryout. Longtime readers of this blog will know I like pizza, and I like Neapolitan-style pizza, the kind … [Read more...]
New Broil King Unit Lets Me Grill With the Best of Them
Wendi and I didn't grill out at our home last summer because our barbecue grill rusted out, and we never replaced it. It was somewhat aggravating because we only had the old unit for what seemed like a couple years. It was the most expensive grill we had ever purchased; it had a stainless steel top, and I thought that was a good thing. The problem was only the cover was stainless steel, and it held up well. The rest of the unit: The burners, the grates and everything just kept rusting and … [Read more...]
