I don't remember the first time I had pizza. Being a child of the 70's, I am sure it was probably a Chef Boyardee box mix. I also grew up with D'Antonio's pizza in Lodi. Which if you ask me, is the best, but I can't tell you when I had my first pizza from there. But my dad, Bud, can tell you the exact year and place where he had pizza for the very first time. It was at Luigi's Pizza in Akron, Ohio in 1956. This year, for my husband Bobby's birthday, he wanted to go to Luigi's with my parents, so … [Read more...]
Bobby’s Birthday Bash Takes Detour
December 7 is known as the "date that will live in infamy" due the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, which catapulted the United States into World War II. It is a date that is remembered every year in the Warren household, as well. Not because of the tragedy in Hawaii, but because it is also the birthday of my husband, Bobby. (Although the two events didn't occur in the same year -- that would be gross to marry someone that much older than me!) However, both events are remembered with traditions. … [Read more...]
Junior’s Restaurant in NYC Proves to be an Excellent Choice
When we visited New York City this past August, every day was a busy day. Wendi, the founder of this blog, and I made the journey with Randi and Shaun Vahl (Randi is Wendi's sister). We averaged 10 miles a day walking, and it was always grueling. On Aug. 22, we began the day walking forever to pick up a ferry ride to Brooklyn. Part of the walk included a trip on the High Line, elevated train tracks converted into a walking trail. The day would take us to Ground Zero (you can read about an … [Read more...]
Zest for Life Podcast: Four Reflect on Running Turkey Burner 5K
My wife, Wendi, the founder of this blog, decided we would run the Turkey Burner 5K in Hinckley, Ohio, on Thanksgiving Day morning. We ran around the lake at Hinckley Reservation. Wendi's sister, Randi, asked us if we wanted to run it with her and her husband, Shaun. We did. It marked the third 5K we ran since October 28. The first one was in Ashland. You can read about it here. The second one was in Dalton. You can read about that experience here. And, listen to the podcast below. We wanted to … [Read more...]
What is Cooking in that Trash Can? You Won’t Believe It
My brother-in-law, Shaun Vahl, loves to cook, and he loves to try new things. He also tries some crazy things. During the summer months, do not be surprised if his dishes contain beer, which he might have brewed at home. In the winter, cream cheese is a favorite ingredient of his. Today, I want to highlight perhaps the craziest cooking method he has ever sprung on the family: Trash Can Turkey. The first time he made it, I was shocked. Trash can turkey? For real? Yes, for real. I do not … [Read more...]
