When we visited New York City this past August, every day was a busy day. Wendi, the founder of this blog, and I made the journey with Randi and Shaun Vahl (Randi is Wendi's sister). We averaged 10 miles a day walking, and it was always grueling. On Aug. 22, we began the day walking forever to pick up a ferry ride to Brooklyn. Part of the walk included a trip on the High Line, elevated train tracks converted into a walking trail. The day would take us to Ground Zero (you can read about an … [Read more...]
The Cake Boss in Manhattan has the Best What?
Cannolis. There, I said it. Carlo's Bake Shop on Eighth Avenue in Manhattan has the best cannoli I have ever eaten. My wife Wendi, the founder of this blog, and I traveled to New York City, staying at the Hyatt Centric off Times Square, this past summer. We traveled with Wendi's sister and her husband, Randi and Shaun Vahl. We were walking all over the place (we literally averaged 10 miles a day while in the city), and on one of the nights we walked past Carlo's Bake Shop. I … [Read more...]
Never Tire of This Birthday Tradition: A Cake Like No Other
My birthday falls on a day that will live in infamy, Dec. 7, Pearl Harbor Day. Each year, I can count on two things from my wife, Wendi (the founder of this blog): A poem and a homemade pineapple upside down cake. One year, Wendi found a recipe in the "Joy of Cooking" cookbook for pineapple upside down cake. She decided she would make it for me. Oh, my. The cake was the best pineapple upside down cake I ever had. It has become a tradition over the past 15 years or so. Wendi makes … [Read more...]
Can Someone Please Explain Frozen Custard to Me?
On Aug. 4, Wendi took me out for a dinner experience at The Melting Pot in Legacy Village. We had a wonderful time (you can read about it here). We didn't want to eat dessert there because we wanted to try a local joint. We asked friends on Facebook where we should go, and Dani Savage enthusiastically recommended East Coast Frozen Custard, as did Sandy Whittlesey. So, East Coast Frozen Custard it was. When Wendi and I got to the place, we kind of stepped to the back to check out … [Read more...]
Wendi and the Chocolate Factory
A recent trip to North Canton allowed my husband, Bobby and I a tour of Harry London's Chocolate Factory. I didn't even need a golden ticket! In fact, anyone can tour the factory if you visit it on a weekday. The tours begin at 10 a.m. and are every hour until 4 p.m. When we arrived, we were given the opportunity to enjoy one of Harry London's signature chocolates, the Buckeye. We were about 20 minutes early for the next tour at 1 p.m., so we perused the retail store. There we were given … [Read more...]
