I'm not a big deli person. I like sandwiches just fine, but I'm talking roast beef or turkey or ham. I don't need pastrami or corn beef or anything exotic. So I was not overly enthusiastic when my husband, Bobby, suggested we try Mr. Zub's Deli and Bar. We were in Akron to attend the inauguration of Frank LaRose as Secretary of State on a recent snowy Saturday. I guess I'm still a little leery of delis after my time at Carnegie Deli in New York City. Let's just say I was not very impressed. … [Read more...]
The Original Steaks & Hoagies Opens in Fairlawn on National Cheesesteak Day
A year or so ago, Bobby and I decided to take a day trip that landed us in Twinsburg, Ohio so that we could try a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich. Bobby had done a search for the best Philly Cheesesteak in Ohio and The Original Steaks & Hoagies was by far the most recommended. (You can read about the adventure here.) One of the owners saw Bobby's post and put it on the company's website. Bobby saw that and they became Facebook friends. Because of that, one of the owners, Jeff Wiseman, … [Read more...]
Don’t Put Selfless Elf (5K) on the Shelf
Friday was a long day, and I was so worn down that I did not want to run in the fifth annual Akron-Canton Regional Foodbank Selfless Elf 5K, a fundraiser to feed the hungry. I put in a full day at The Daily Record newspaper before heading out for a magic show deep into Amish Country, which required travel over snow-covered, narrow, winding and hilly township roads. It took me about 55 minutes to make a 33-minute trip. And, then I had to drive home after the magic show. I was tired and hungry … [Read more...]
Luigi’s: Iconic Akron Eatery Worth the Trip (and the Wait)
I don't remember the first time I had pizza. Being a child of the 70's, I am sure it was probably a Chef Boyardee box mix. I also grew up with D'Antonio's pizza in Lodi. Which if you ask me, is the best, but I can't tell you when I had my first pizza from there. But my dad, Bud, can tell you the exact year and place where he had pizza for the very first time. It was at Luigi's Pizza in Akron, Ohio in 1956. This year, for my husband Bobby's birthday, he wanted to go to Luigi's with my parents, so … [Read more...]
Isabella’s Reign as Princess Finally Begins
When my niece, Ashley, asked me if I would want to be with her during the delivery of her third child, I was like "Yes! I was going to ask you if I could come." Now don't think me weird, but since I have never given birth, I thought it would be cool to see this miracle happen. She asked me in the fourth or fifth month of what turned out to be a almost full term pregnancy. That meant for a good four months Ashley and I could have talked about what would be helpful for her in the delivery … [Read more...]
