I love the Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical The Sound of Music. In fact, it is one of my favorites. I grew up watching it every year on network TV (before VCRs and DVDs and DVRs). Julie Andrews owns the role of Maria the nun, turned governess, turned wife of a naval captain. I sing the songs, even when I'm by myself and without any accompaniment. It's just so familiar to me. Sometimes, I have even forgotten it is based on a true story. But this past October 2017, my husband, Bobby, and I were … [Read more...]
Seeing Washington, D.C., Through the Eyes of Veterans
Editor's Note: With Veterans Day today, we want to highlight this post from Aug. 28, 2016. We are grateful for the men and women who have served and sacrificed to protect our country, freedom and liberty. I come from a family of veterans. Only a couple served during war time, but they all took the oath and had the possibility of giving their lives. My grandfathers (Combs and Sartor) served in the Army during WWII. My dad, Bud, served in the Army during the Cold War. He has movies of the … [Read more...]
A Tale of Two 5Ks in 8 Days: Learning to Never Say ‘Never’
As I write this post, I am able to say that I just finished my second 5K as a "runner." Don't get me wrong, there were plenty of walkers who finished before me, but I ran both times, the whole time. But when your husband comes home from the doctor saying, "The doctor told me that my joints are … [Read more...]
Five Things to do in The Big Apple
We planned our trip to New York City for about a year, give or take a month or two. Through this time frame we would ask friends what they would suggest we do when we were there. We got lots of great ideas, too many to fit into the short five day stay. So now that I am a "pro" at touring the Big Apple, I thought I'd let you know the things I tell someone who was about to visit NYC. Go to a Broadway Show: Whether you like musicals or not, there are tons of options available in the … [Read more...]
Bomba Tacos & Rum Brings Caribbean Flavors to Northeast Ohio
When my husband, Bobby, and I went to Fairlawn, Ohio a couple of weeks ago, we were trying to decide where to eat lunch. We ended up at The Melt Bar and Grilled, which you can read about here, but had tossed around the idea of going to Bomba Tacos & Rum. We had never been there, but it sounded interesting. So when my niece, Ashley, and I were in Fairlawn the next week, Bobby suggested we try Bomba's without him. While I rely on Bobby to get pictures, I agreed to do my best. After we … [Read more...]
