When my wife, Wendi, founded this blog, the idea was to write about places we visited, restaurants where we ate and fun things we did. As we traveled throughout Ohio, and even the United States, one of the things we discovered is that we can never really leave Wayne County behind. Wayne County is the home of the J.M. Smucker Co., Smith Foods/Smith Dairy, the Certified Angus Beef brand and now Daisy Brand and GOJO hand cleaners. Another major player in Wooster/Wayne County is The Ohio State University with its Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center and its Agricultural Technical Institute.
During a recent trip to Put-in-Bay, we realized we didn’t trek too far from Wayne County, in a figurative sense, when we stumbled upon Ohio State University’s Stone Laboratory on Gibraltar Island. Like OARDC, Stone Lab is a teaching and research facility. It has been active since 1895, and it has been part of OSU since 1925.
We were there on a Saturday, and it was closed. Unfortunately, we did not get to see the place up close and personal and learn more about the research being done on issues Lake Erie faces, like the algal bloom problem. However, we did get a chance to walk around the small, quaint campus. We took Owney with us, and he liked walking around the place.
