The other day was my 7th birthday. I only know this because my mom, Wendi (the creator of this blog) told me. I’m like my dad, Bobby. I don’t keep track of such things because Mom is always around to tell us how old we are. Sometimes she has to count down from the year we came to the house. (She always does this with Gracie and Buddy, two of my feline siblings. I think it is because they are so old — 17 years old this year.) So, anyhow, Mom tells me it is my birthday but then I hear her tell Dad that she didn’t plan anything! Of all people, my mom should know to plan something for a birthday. She celebrates her’s for a whole week!
Maybe because Dad was working that night, she didn’t feel like doing anything, but then fate or something stepped in. Mom got a notice in the mail from the library that a book she ordered was available and going to be sent back if she didn’t pick it up soon. You know what that meant, I got a ride in the car! One of my all time favorite things to do is go for a ride. Yipee!
So then while we are out and about (she had to get gas in the car), I think she starts to feel bad that she didn’t get me anything for my birthday. So you know what she did? She decided to make it like her 8th birthday. When she turned 8 she got to go out with her mom to a store and pick anything she wanted (within reason) for her present. Then she got to go out to eat somewhere, just her and her mom. (Her dad was working on her 8th birthday, just like my dad!) So Mom took me to Pets Supplies Plus. Another one of my favorite things to do!
Only this time it was different. Usually Dad is with us and they do the whole, “We need litter, moist cat food, dry cat food…yadda, yadda, yadda.” (Those cats can be so expensive!) So Dad picks up the stuff and Mom and me walk around. This time it was all about me! She didn’t rush me. O.K. at one point she made me go back outside so that I could pee. I think she was afraid I was going to go in the store. (I have been known to do that, I’m afraid to say.) But then back inside we went. I went up one aisle and down the next. It was great!
The only bad part about it was that I wasn’t allowed to go into the back. Some sort of rules about employees only being allowed back there. I don’t know why they have such restrictions. I wouldn’t get into any trouble back there if I got to go. But alas, no such luck. Mom did tell the girl at the checkout it was my birthday and so she gave me a special cookie.
Mom let me pick out a couple of toys and she also got a bag of treats for me that I have never had before. Then she stopped at McDonald’s for a vanilla ice cream cone in a cup! I took a couple of bites, but I really wanted to wait until I got home to enjoy it.
When Dad got home (really late by the way) Mom told him what we did. He was glad. He said he had hoped we would have gotten to do something to celebrate. Mom then told him that I didn’t get any of the new things yet, cause she wanted him to be around! I guess I can understand. We are a family and it just wouldn’t be the same without him watching me kill a new toy or two. So it might have been a low key birthday, but it was still great. Although, if you look at what I did, it is almost like every day of my life. Hey, maybe everyday is my birthday! That is so cool.
