February 13, was a perfect day to view the ice sculpture displays at the 2016 Medina (Ohio) Ice Festival. It was freezing, so there was no fear of the sculptures melting. It was snowing, which added to the charm. It was Valentines weekend and I was with my wonderful husband, Bobby, which made being there romantic, even if it was freezing and snowing.
The weather didn’t seem to keep many people away. There were plenty checking out the different sculptures. We were there from around 1-3:30. During the time, we saw so many amazing frozen creations and I don’t mean ice cream. Some had words carved in them, while others were animal figures and of course hearts.
There was one like the eiffel tower. One was done like an ice cream cone (it was outside of Lemonberry). There was a butterfly and a sword fish. My favorites were of Yoda and R2-D2. I’m sure that isn’t a surprise. There was also a Minion.
We were there during the competition time, so chain saws and dremels were running continuously. It was interesting to watch the process. This style of artistry is such a unique form. The artists not only have to figure out what to do with a block of ice, they have to do it in temperatures that aren’t the most comfortable. You’ve got to admire their dedication.
We did take a couple of detours while we were on the Square. One to get lunch at Courthouse Pizza. Bobby will be writing a blog about our time there. Then we found Chill, an artisan ice cream parlor. I will be writing more about that at a later date, but for now I will tell you it was very good.
All in all it was a great way to spend a Saturday in February. Even if it was a little cold and snowy. And besides, I’d rather be freezing walking around with Bobby, than anywhere else by myself.
