Have you ever had the experience of discovering something awesome by accident? I don’t have a lot of experiences like that, but I did just this past weekend. Pav’s Creamery is awesome!
Bobby and I took Owney to Portage Lakes State Park on Labor Day and on our way there we passed Pav’s Creamery. It is on the corner of Manchester Road and State Road. Bobby said we needed to stop there on our way back. I had no intention of doing such a thing. From the quick glimpse I had, it looked like some hole in the wall.
After we had our adventures at the park (which you can check out here if you missed it), we drove around the lakes. I thought for sure we wouldn’t even pass Pav’s on the way home. But Bobby was bound and determined to go. So he navigated our way there with the GPS.
When we got there and a couple of people had just gotten their orders, but other than that it was just Bobby and me. It didn’t take long for that to change. Since we hadn’t been there before, we let a few people go ahead of us. As the girl behind the counter explained to us a couple of flavors, it was like a flood gate had opened. All these cars were pulling into the parking lot and tons of people were approaching the stand. We had to make our decision and fast or else we would have to wait for a long time—and I hate waiting!
I got a medium size dish–which is a pretty substantial portion. This afforded me to be able to try three different flavors. I chose Mint Chocolate Chip, Mudd Lake–which is like chocolate brownie batter with mini peanut butter cups, and Chocolate. Bobby chose a medium dish with Salted Caramel Brownie, Peanut Butter Oreo and Nuts over Coconut.
This ice cream, was smooth and flavorful. Bobby even said that it was probably the best coconut ice cream he has ever had. Mind you, we are fans of Graeter’s out of Cincinnati, so that was quite a compliment.
I was completely surprised by how good it was. One reason is that the building is so unassuming. If Bobby hadn’t insisted, I wouldn’t have stopped. Another reason, is that while I really love my frozen desserts, I do have high bar for rating it. I would count Pav’s as one of the best. It is right in line with Graeter’s, Mudd Valley Creamery (from Walnut Creek) and Guerne Heights (near Apple Creek). So let’s just say, I might be willing to make a trip to Portage Lakes area again, just to try some other Pav’s flavors. I don’t think I’ll even have to twist Bobby’s arm to take that trip again!
If you know what I mean about being surprised by accident, I’d love to hear about it. Or if you have a favorite ice cream you think I should try, let me know. As always, you can leave your comments below.

We love Pav’s! It’s only a few minutes from our house here in Portage Lakes! Some of my favorite flavors are chocolate almond and nuts over coconut. Did you know Mudd Lake is one of the Portage Lakes? Therefore, the name of the flavor you mention. Glad you liked it!

Jenny,
I didn’t know that Mudd Lake was one of the Portage Lakes. I’m not that familiar with the lakes, but would like to learn more about them. I’m sure I will, since Pav’s will be a place I’ll be visiting again. Thanks for your comment!
