A funny thing happened on the way to Cedar Point recently. Bobby, my husband, and I were traveling U.S. Route 250 going to Cedar Point’s media event for the opening of their newest coaster, Valravn. (You can read about that adventure by clicking here.) Just a little before the Ashland County line (so still in Wayne County), we saw the sign for an ice cream shop, Scoops Sweet-Treats & More. We didn’t have time to stop for ice cream, but we made a mental note that we would come back and give it a try. Little did I know that it would be the very next evening!
On Friday, May 6, 2016, Bobby said that we needed to take Owney for a ride to make up for the fact that we were gone all night on Thursday, May 5. Owney happily obliged. So we drove to New Pittsburg to get ice cream. When we arrived, we decided we would get the ice cream and bring it out to the car, so that Owney wouldn’t be alone for too long. (I know, we might spoil the dog…just a little bit.)
Bobby is always the reporter, in that he usually asks to speak the manager when we go to a business. I think it makes the server nervous, but then he quickly explains that I write a blog and then they relax. Kenzie, our server (which we learned her name later), went and got the owner, Heather Mark. Heather came out and gave us a brief history of Scoops. It actually just opened on October 4, 2015. Turns out that running Scoops is a family affair. Heather’s husband decided to open the shop, but she runs it, her son, Zack and daughter, Kenzie work there as well as as some extended family. Kenzie said it is “cool” that her parents own the ice cream parlor.
They make all the ice cream on-site and use the same ice cream makers as Pav’s Creamery (you can see my blog post about Pav’s here). Heather explained a little of their process and the different flavors she makes. While some are seasonal, they always have on hand Strawberry, Chocolate, Vanilla, Butter Pecan and Peanut Butter Cup. They also serve food like burgers and other sandwiches. (We didn’t try them, but they aren’t very far away, so we might go back sometime for dinner and dessert.)
Bobby and I tried a couple of flavors before making our final decisions. Bobby tried Cotton Candy and Black Cherry. I tried Salted Caramel and Peanut Butter Cup. Bobby settled on a two scoop ice cream dish. He got Salted Caramel and Coconut Cream. He really liked the ice cream. Because the Salted Caramel was pretty fresh, it was still soft. Which seemed to help it melt in his mouth even quicker. I splurged on a Hot Fudge Brownie Delight. However, instead of vanilla ice cream, I got chocolate ice cream. It was so very yummy. I think the fudge was on top of the brownie instead of the ice cream–which made me happy, because the ice cream didn’t melt as fast.Oh yeah, Owney got a small vanilla cup. (I know, we spoil the dog a little bit.)
It was a nice night. We got to take a short road trip with our boy, Owney. We got to support a new local business. And we got to enjoy some really great ice cream. You should stop and get a couple of scoops at Scoops sometime this summer (if it ever gets here). And if it doesn’t, go anyway, there is no bad time for ice cream.
