Bobby, my husband, and I took a trip to Oberlin this past spring to try Cowhaus Creamery. (You can read about that trip here.)We did so because we had heard the owners, Joe Bomback and Debby Krejsa, were opening a location in downtown Wooster, Ohio. Unfortunately, they didn’t open as quickly as anyone hoped — them or us. But don’t worry, they are open now! Bobby and I had the chance to try them out in their opening day, Friday, September 30th.
Before we even stepped inside the restaurant, we spoke to Joe and Debby — well mostly Joe. Debby had to get inside to help out as people were heading in to try the ice cream. We learned from Joe how the creamery all began. It started as a love for cooking that he developed in his other life as a recording artist and producer, but didn’t fully germinate until Thanksgiving 2009. During a drive to pick up ingredients to make a pumpkin marscapone, Joe had an “aha” moment where Cowhaus Creamery was born. After a couple of years of studying and planning, he and Debby opened the Oberlin location in 2012. Now, four years later, he has expanded to Wooster.
Though the shop looked a little different than the one in Oberlin, the ice cream is the same great quality. We again tried some of the flavors before making our final decision. I tried the caramel salt, the apple cider (which has a nice spicy flavor) , wabi sabi (a ginger flavor ice cream with a plum ribbon) and firelands mint chip. Bobby tried the wabi sabi, cartoon milk (like the bottom of a cereal bowl), sure house coffee and the pear sorbet.
In the end and some what ironically we ended up settling on the same flavors we had ordered in Oberlin. Only this time we got them in their freshly made waffle cones. (It cost extra, but I have come to really enjoy waffle cones.) So my cone was filled with chocolate gestalt and firelands mint chip; Bobby’s had toasted coconut and caramel salt. We’re nothing if not consistent!
If you are looking for some ice cream that is a little out of the ordinary and made with high quality ingredients, then you should give Cowhaus Creamery a try. They are having their grand opening this coming weekend, beginning October 7. Joe also said that he is planning on having an ice cream social to introduce people to Cowhaus Creamery in the near future. We might just have to show up there to see what other flavors they have added. I am sure there will be something unusual and a little on the wild side.
