Bill Franck walked the halls of Wooster High School with clipboard in hand, stopping to ask students how they did. With eyes always scanning, he was trying to see which of the students were his and what rooms needed to be closed. The high school was packed Saturday with a swim meet and basketball games, but the crowds for those events paled in comparison to the the one in which Franck was involved: the Sharen B. Althoff Rotary International Speech Tournament, which attracted about 1,000 … [Read more...]
Fit by 50: Fact or Fiction?
Two years ago, right around my 48th birthday I thought to myself, "OK, you're going to be 50 in two years, why not make it your goal to be fit by 50." I thought taking it slow and giving myself 2 years sounded reasonable. Well... here we are and I am a scant 6 months from my birthday and "fit" isn't exactly a term I would use to describe me. Granted my husband, Bobby, and I started "running" in August, but I have not seen many changes to my physique. So what's a girl to do when faced with … [Read more...]
Boy from Revere, Mass. Makes Good in Wooster, Ohio
My husband, Bobby, often tells people he is from "severe Revere" [Massachusetts]. I'm not sure what he means by this, other than that must have been what he and his friends called it when he was growing up in the city just north of Boston. (Really, it's part of Boston like Euclid is part of Cleveland.) Bobby is the second child and first boy in his family. His father is from an anglo-saxon background and his mother is second generation Italian born in the USA. Bobby's parents separated when he … [Read more...]

My wife, Wendi, the founder of this blog, and I seem to have a negative effect on New York businesses. A year after we visited the Waldorf Astoria it closed. After we visited the famed Carnegie Deli it closed. We ate at Guy Fieri's American Kitchen & Bar, and now it has gone kaput. Where will it all end? Well, a little truth in advertising: The Waldorf Astoria closed for repairs (you can read about it here); I think the owner of the Carnegie Deli just wanted out of the business (you … [Read more...]
Top 12 Posts for 2017
This past year has been an interesting one for Wendi’s Weekend Trips & Whatnot. My wife, Wendi, the founder of this blog, always sought to write a blog post every other day … roughly 182 posts a year. That was an ambitious effort. I suggested three times a week. In the busy-ness of life, our productivity slipped in the middle of the year. It really slowed in August because of our trip to New York, which was go-go-go all the time. However, after New York, the output was more consistent, … [Read more...]
