Wendi and I were headed to Berlin, Ohio, in order to check into the Berlin Grande Hotel to enjoy some time away and celebrate 21 years of marriage. I had an idea: Find a nice burger place and surprise her for lunch. Wendi loves burgers; the messier the better. I settled on Blazin' Burgers in Strasburg. The intent was to go there on Friday, we ended up there on Saturday afternoon. After a great stay at the Berlin Grande Hotel and some time in downtown Berlin, we stopped at Walnut Creek … [Read more...]
Treasure Hunting in Berlin, Ohio
My husband, Bobby, and I really enjoy visiting the Amish Heartland in Holmes County, Ohio. We go there often. In fact, we were just there on our anniversary weekend, March 4-5, 2016. Usually when we visit, we have our favorite places to go. We never miss a chance to go to Walnut Creek Cheese to shop or Mrs. Yoder's in Mt. Hope for a meal. Most of the time we just pass through Berlin on our way to Walnut Creek. That wasn't this case this weekend. We spent a few hours touring downtown Berlin and … [Read more...]
Want Luxury? Try the Berlin Grande Hotel
My husband, Bobby, and I had the opportunity to celebrate our wedding anniversary by getting away from it all. We decided to go to an area we love to visit, Berlin, Ohio in the Amish Heartland. We visit the area often, but this time made it a weekend getaway. We stayed one night at the Berlin Grande Hotel. In a word, it was wonderful! Driving up to the hotel, it sort of catches your breath. Bobby was right when he said it seemed majestic. (We entered from 62 East.) It sits up on a hill. … [Read more...]
Super 8 Rewind: Reliving Movie Trip
I'm not sure I agree with John Denver, that West Virginia is almost heaven, but it is a good location for filming a sci-fi movie, specifically Weirton, WV. The movie was Super 8, an adolescent come of age, with a little B-Movie zombie action and a very misunderstood alien. It's a really fun movie to watch. When it came out in June 2011, I went to see it a couple of times in the theater and then when the DVD was released, I got that, too. Bobby enjoyed the movie, as well. Weirton is not … [Read more...]
I Found New York-style Pizza in the Unlikeliest of Places
In Boston, most pizzerias make a New York-style pizza. This is the style I grew up eating, and it is the one I prefer. This style of pizza has a thin crust (not like Pizza Hut's thin, cracker-like crust), is hand-stretched, hand-tossed and baked in an extremely hot oven (one coal-fired oven in New York reaches 2,000 degrees). Because of the high heat, the pizza cooks in mere minutes. This browns the cheese, chars the crust and gives the pizza a nice flavor. Well, trying to find this … [Read more...]
