I know what you’re thinking, because I have thought it, too, but no, this is not becoming exclusively an ice cream blog. However, on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, the eagerly anticipated opening of the combined Dunkin Donuts/Baskin-Robbins finally occurred.
I was super excited about Dunkin Donuts and on my way to work stopped for a donut. I didn’t realize that I would be stopping by in the evening for ice cream. But hey, when my husband, Bobby, suggested we go, he didn’t really have to twist my arm to return for the ice cream.
Let me just say that a huge amount of kudos goes out to the servers. The place was packed! We were actually able to get a parking spot in the parking lot (someone was pulling out when we were driving by), but I heard one lady tell her friend that she had to park in an adjacent parking lot. I know the servers had to be overwhelmed, but they were all friendly and smiled. They didn’t even seem to mind letting the customers try different flavors.
We tried several. I even stepped out of the norm and tried a couple of fruit flavored ones. I tried the Sour Patch Kids Red Berry Blast (marshmallow and red raspberry ice creams with a raspberry sour patch kids ribbon) and the Baseball Nut. The Baseball Nut was vanilla based ice cream with cashews and a ribbon of black raspberry. Bobby tried the Pralines and Cream, the Baseball Nut and the Jamoca flavors.
When it came time to place the order, Bobby was going to get a waffle cone, but they actually had run out. So he got a scoop of Pralines and Cream and a scoop of Baseball Nut in a cup with a sugar cone on top. Bobby had not been to a Baskin-Robbins in decades. Other than Dairy Queen, he prefers local ice cream shops to chains. But what really stood out with Baskin-Robbins was the flavor, the creaminess and the smoothness.
I did what my parents always hated. I got a sundae. (They hated that because I was never a “cheap date.”) Only at Baskin-Robbins they have this Warm Cookie Sundae. I got the double. It came with two scoops of ice cream, three cookies, hot fudge, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry. (I don’t think my server had made one before, but he was a champion.) Wonder what flavors of ice cream I got? Chocolate and World Class Chocolate. World Class Chocolate (yes, it is different than chocolate) is white chocolate mousse ice cream mixed with chocolate mousse ice cream. I agree with Bobby, the creamy texture of the ice cream stood out to me. The sundae was so rich, that I decided to take one of the cookies home to have for later.
I can pretty much guarantee that it won’t be years before we come back. Not just because it’s in our town, but also because the ice cream was just that good.
