January 2009 is a time that will live forever in my mind as a pivotal moment for my husband, Bobby, and me. That was the month we began the Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University at Grace Church in Wooster, Ohio. Before that time, Bobby and I had a good life, but we were living paycheck to paycheck. Each month I would try to figure out how to dig ourselves out of our ever increasing debt and each month we slipped backwards. We could always pay our bills, but it was a struggle. We didn’t fight about money, but I could definitely see how people could. I would be stressed out and frustrated. Thankfully Bobby was patient with me!
In December 2008, I think we reached our tipping point. I was praying that God would get Bobby and me on the same page financially. Earlier that year Bobby had started to listen to the Dave Ramsey radio show. He told me about it and said we should try. I couldn’t figure out why we had to pay money to learn how to manage money, so I resisted. God basically had to get my attention and say, “Hey, you asked for you guys to be on the same page. You are now, so take advantage of it.”
The Financial Peace University class was an answer to my prayers. It taught Bobby and me about our different approaches to money and how to work together despite the differences. It showed us how to make a plan for our money each month and probably more significantly, to allocate funds appropriately. We learned about the importance of an emergency fund, how to create a debt snowball and other things about money.
Almost 8 years later and our lives a great. We have an emergency fund that we are growing. We have paid off all of our credit cards, Bobby’s student loans, 4 car loans (which we paid off early) and some major medical bills. While we still owe on our house and my student loan, we are working to get them paid off. We don’t go into debt. We enjoy doing fun things, but now we use cash. (See my blog if you want to know some of the things we have done!)
This is why I decided to be a coordinator for a Financial Peace University class. We will begin on January 4, 2017. It will be held at Parkview Christian Church in Wooster and will start at 6:30 p.m. If you want your life to change financially, then I would encourage you to sign up. The class we took in 2009 was 13 weeks long. The Dave Ramsey group modified their program to now be just 9 weeks long. How would you like to change your life in 9 weeks? We did and you can too! I hope you will.
