I love the Rodgers and Hammerstein's musical The Sound of Music. In fact, it is one of my favorites. I grew up watching it every year on network TV (before VCRs and DVDs and DVRs). Julie Andrews owns the role of Maria the nun, turned governess, turned wife of a naval captain. I sing the songs, even when I'm by myself and without any accompaniment. It's just so familiar to me. Sometimes, I have even forgotten it is based on a true story. But this past October 2017, my husband, Bobby, and I were … [Read more...]
Seeing Washington, D.C., Through the Eyes of Veterans
Editor's Note: With Veterans Day today, we want to highlight this post from Aug. 28, 2016. We are grateful for the men and women who have served and sacrificed to protect our country, freedom and liberty. I come from a family of veterans. Only a couple served during war time, but they all took the oath and had the possibility of giving their lives. My grandfathers (Combs and Sartor) served in the Army during WWII. My dad, Bud, served in the Army during the Cold War. He has movies of the … [Read more...]
Five Things to Do In (or Near) Stowe, Vermont
During a recent visit the family of my husband, Bobby, in Massachusetts, we decided to take a quick trip to Vermont. A Visit to Zoe’s Chocolate Company Brings Me Joy
It's no secret I'm a chocoholic. I really can't remember a time when chocolate wasn't my go-to dessert. It used to make my dad, Bud, so mad. I remember one time being at an ice cream stand and him asking me what I wanted. I said, "Do they have chocolate?" He said, "There's more flavors than just chocolate, Wendi!" While that may be true, in my head I was thinking, "Why?" So when we were in Pennsylvania and my Aunt Kim said that there was an artisan chocolatier in the nearby town of Waynesboro, I … [Read more...]
Discovery of a Hidden Gem: James Buchanan’s Birthplace State Park
During our recent trip to Pennsylvania, Bobby, my husband, and I, along with my Uncle Jay and Aunt Kim, finally visited the birthplace of James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States. I say finally because ever since we have been visiting Jay and Kim, Bobby has expressed the desire to stop and check the historical site out. I had resisted, not because I have anything against James Buchanan (I honestly didn't know much about him), but because it seemed inconvenient. His birthplace is … [Read more...]
